The West Chester Historic Courthouse was built in 1846. Thomas U. Walter designed it, who also designed the dome of the United States Capitol building. It’s listed as a heritage landmark, complete with its architecture and clock tower.

From the mid-19th century to the late 20th century, this courthouse served as the county seat of administration. Today, the courthouse houses the visitor center. It also holds non-judicial administrative offices. 

Horticultural Hall (Chester County Historic Center)

Location: 225 N High St, West Chester, PA 19380

Thomas Walter also built the Horticultural Hall in West Chester in 1848. The exterior of this building features a unique Romanesque-style facade and green stone.

At the time, this building made history as the second building in the US explicitly constructed for horticultural exhibitions. Today, this building serves as an essential part of the Chester County Historic Center, where visitors can explore historic artifacts. 

William Darlington Building 

Location: 13 North High Street, West Chester, PA 19380

James Smith built the William Darlington Building in 1789. William Sharpless enlarged it in 1792. It’s the oldest surviving First Period structure within the original grid of West Chester. The building’s name comes from its dedication to William Darlington, a man considered one of the fathers of West Chester.
